Why we like GoogleTalk.

March 4, 2010

When we where about to launch we showed this site to our friends and partners. Of course, they first reaction was “why the hell are you guys using Gtalk for your live chat needs?, why don’t use liveperson(tm) or any of those similar services?”. The answer is easy: it covers what we need. One of the success of companies like 37signals is they offer exactly what the user needs and nothing else, like Basecamp(tm) which is a project management system, or Backpack(tm) which is a bit of a wiki mixed with docs, or Campfire(tm), or even Highrise(tm), their new product and one we actually use here at PSDChimp.

There is nothing wrong with liveperson(tm) or any other service of live chat for what we know. The thing is, Google Talk covers exactly what we need, and that’s it. We don’t need any extra features on our chat, so we work mainly with Google Talk. Our email is managed by Google so its natural to use Gtalk to manage our live chat area. So why pay and subscribe to a service that offers you things you won’t be using? I mean, we will just be using the chat, not the report tools and all the other features most of this services offer.

I’m sure other companies need those features, but we don’t so it’s basically a way of living to the motto “less is more”. And that answers why we use GoogleTalk for our live chat needs! we save money, everyone knows how to use it, and integrating the chat window was a blast!

I have to admit it: the only issue with it is the “you are chatting with an unidentified user. Be careful what you discuss” message you get when you start chatting, which sucks but… aside from that, works really well and do its work. People shouldn’t discuss sensible matters on a live chat anyway, so it is not that bad of  warning.

UPDATE: ok so it wasn’t the best choice apparently. The “you are chatting with an unidentified user” scared a lot of people. The world isn’t ready for Gtalk to take on the Live Chat area yet, so we installed a great Live Support client instead. It’s quite simple and it doesn’t require any login by the user. Works as a charm right now, try it, chat with the Chimp!
